Established in 1982 by invasion, this squatter settlement was composed of some of the poorest people who had migrated to Mexicali years previously and had very precarious housing situations that in the United States might have led to them being homeless.  This widowed woman lived on the lot of friends in a house without electricity or running water and was dependent on neighbors to buy her food.  Please note:  Now deceased, this elderly woman was photographed when I did research in the squatter settlement from 1988 to 1994.  I had her permission to publish the photo from the beginning.  —Tamar Diana Wilson
